Find professional help

Practical guidance for the step that matters most: connecting with a qualified human being.

Types of support

  • Primary care physician

Often the best first stop: rules out medical causes (thyroid, anemia, sleep apnea, medication effects), treats mild presentations, and issues referrals. In Georgia's system, family doctors coordinate care and referrals under state programs.

  • Psychotherapist / counselor

Licensed practitioners of structured therapies — CBT, psychodynamic, systemic, humanistic. For Georgia, verify registration and modality training; ask for the evidence base for your specific problem.

  • Clinical / counseling psychologist

Assessment and psychotherapy; in many systems, psychologists run diagnostic evaluation and structured therapy programs.

  • Psychiatrist

Medical doctor specializing in mental health — the prescriber. For moderate-severe presentations, medication decisions, and complex comorbidity.

Preparing for a first appointment

  1. 1Write your timeline: symptoms, duration, changes, what makes things better or worse.
  2. 2Bring your screening results with dates — numbers open precise conversations.
  3. 3Note what you've already tried: self-help, medications, therapy, and their effects.
  4. 4List your questions before the appointment; the first one should be the hardest one.
  5. 5Decide your goal in one sentence: what should be different after treatment?

This assessment is an informational screening tool, not a medical diagnosis. Results are based on your responses and should not replace evaluation by a qualified healthcare professional.
